Us-iran agreement details: Strait of Hormuz reopening, nuclear freeze, 60-day timeline

A leaked draft memorandum of the US-Iran agreement includes provisions for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a freeze on Iran’s nuclear activities, and a 60-day timeline for finalizing the deal, according to a senior Iranian official cited by Reuters. The agreement, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, is set to be signed within 60 days of a preliminary accord, though Tehran has yet to formally confirm.

Despite earlier announcements by President Donald Trump and a Pakistani mediator that the signing would take place on Sunday, Iranian authorities have not issued a declaration. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that the final memorandum covers a range of issues, including the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels and the lifting of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Under the terms, the United States has agreed not to impose any new sanctions on Iran until the final agreement is signed. In return, Iran has committed to maintaining the status quo on its nuclear program, including a ban on uranium enrichment and expansion of nuclear facilities. – The final agreement is to be discussed within 60 days of both sides reaching an understanding – the official said.

Key details of the US-Iran agreement

The draft memorandum reportedly involves a phased approach. Iran would immediately open the strategic waterway, which has been a flashpoint in regional tensions, while the US would end its naval blockade. Both sides would then negotiate the final terms over the next two months. The agreement also includes a commitment from Washington to refrain from new sanctions during this period.

Iran’s nuclear program, a central point of contention, would be frozen at current levels. This means no further enrichment or construction of nuclear facilities. The senior Iranian official stressed that the final agreement would be discussed within 60 days of the preliminary understanding.

Israel’s security concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a security cabinet meeting on Sunday following Trump’s announcement of the deal. Senior Israeli officials cited by Channel 12 said the terms „threaten Israel’s security interests” and that Washington had accepted „major conditions” set by Tehran.

Axios reported that Israeli officials are alarmed by the agreement but are avoiding public criticism. – I understand Israeli skepticism – a US official told reporters on Friday. American representatives assured Israel that Iranian reports misinterpret the deal’s content. – We believe that once they see the full content of the agreement and understand that essentially Iran must fulfill its obligations before we provide any benefits, they will accept it – a senior US official said.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Friday that the agreement is based on Trump’s assessment of American interests and added that Israel reserves the right to act independently against Iran’s nuclear program. Israel also fears that the deal could restrict IDF operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. A senior US official noted that continued Iranian support for Hezbollah would violate the agreement, as would any Hezbollah attacks on Israel.
