Polish rolling stock manufacturer Pesa Bydgoszcz has passed a key speed milestone. During tests at the VUZ Velim experimental track in the Czech Republic, the new electric multiple unit built for private Czech operator RegioJet reached 200 km/h for the first time.
The trial validated the vehicle’s traction and dynamic performance, according to the company. The test programme included acceleration measurements and stability checks at high speed.
– The traction parameter tests ended successfully – the vehicle confirmed very good traction characteristics, including acceleration and stability at high speeds – said Bartosz Białkiewicz, director of the homologation and functional safety department at Pesa Bydgoszcz.
– What is particularly important for us – the entire team involved in the tests – drivers, engineers and experts – rated the new design very highly – Białkiewicz added.
Breakthrough in high-speed rail testing
The successful run on the Velim ring marks the first time a Pesa-built train has officially reached 200 km/h. The achievement positions the company as a credible supplier of high-speed-capable rolling stock for the European market.
The new platform is designed for various passenger rail standards, offering a two-class layout. The vehicles for RegioJet are designated as Pesa EMU 666 and EMU 667 series.
These are multi-system units capable of operating under both 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC overhead lines, making them suitable for cross-border services between Poland and the Czech Republic, and potentially other European countries.
Advanced features for cross-border operations
The trainsets comply with the latest Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and are equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2. This ensures seamless operation across different national signalling systems.
Passenger comfort has been prioritised, with dedicated first- and second-class seating, family areas, and a kitchen-bar module. The design aims to meet the expectations of modern interregional travellers.
Further testing is already underway, and the next phases of the programme are confirming the vehicle’s readiness for commercial service. Initial passenger-carrying trips are planned for December 2026.
Next steps and passenger service launch
After the speed validation and additional reliability trials, RegioJet will begin supervised passenger operations. The introduction of the new trains is expected to enhance the quality of interregional connections operated by the Czech carrier.
Pesa has been steadily expanding its presence in the European market, and the 200 km/h capability adds a competitive edge. The company hopes the successful test will lead to further orders from operators looking to modernise their fleets with fast, efficient, and interoperable rolling stock.
