A seminar held at the Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka mine brought together geologists, historians and industry veterans to celebrate the discoverers and documenters of the Lublin Coal Basin. The event, organised by the Polish Geological Institute and LW Bogdanka, highlighted how the region’s resource potential can shape national energy security and economic identity for decades.
The meeting, which took place at the end of May, was titled 'Discoverers – Columbus of the Lublin Coal: memory, science, heritage’. It focused on the role of researchers who spent years drilling, mapping and documenting deposits long before the first tonne of coal was extracted. Their work transformed scientific hypotheses into one of Poland’s most important industrial investments.
The story of geological courage
Jerzy Markowski, a former deputy minister of economy, gave a speech that placed the history of Bogdanka in a broader narrative of Polish mining expertise and state responsibility for natural resources. He stressed that the most critical decisions in mining are made long before the first coal is dug.
– Bogdanka is proof that in mining the most important decisions are made long before the first tonne of coal. First comes the courage of geologists, then documentation, design, construction, and only then a mine that changes a region for generations – said Jerzy Markowski.
The commemorative session included presentations dedicated to the pioneers of the Lublin Coal Basin. The aim was to remind the public of the people who, through their persistence, laid the foundations for a modern mining centre in the Lublin region.
A lesson for the future
The event also had a contemporary dimension. It served as a reminder that questions about the region’s raw materials do not belong only to the past. Responsible exploration of geological potential remains a vital part of thinking about the future of the economy, energy and national security.
A highlight of the seminar was the unveiling of a plaque honouring the discoverers and documenters of the Lublin Coal Basin. The plaque, placed in the Cechownia building at LW Bogdanka, is meant to be a permanent sign of gratitude for those whose knowledge, work and research courage gave rise to the story of Lublin coal.
As the participants noted, the history of Bogdanka is not only a story of a company. It is a story of science, a region, and Polish geology and mining. Thanks to that work, the Lublin Coal Basin became one of the most important elements of the economic identity of the region.
