Lubelskie coal basin has great potential. Bogdanka set an example

The Lubelskie Coal Basin remains a strategic asset for Poland’s energy security, as demonstrated by the success of the Bogdanka mine. A recent seminar in Bogdanka honored the pioneers who discovered and documented the deposits, highlighting the enduring importance of domestic resources.

The seminar, titled „Discoverers – Columbus of Lublin Coal: Memory, Science, Heritage,” was organized by the Polish Geological Institute and LW Bogdanka. It brought together geologists, engineers, and former officials to reflect on the region’s mining history and its future potential.

Jerzy Markowski, former deputy minister of economy, gave a keynote speech. He emphasized that the most critical decisions in mining are made long before the first ton of coal is extracted. – First comes the courage of geologists, then documentation, then the project, then construction, and only then a mine that changes the region for generations – said Jerzy Markowski.

The legacy of geological pioneers

One of the main goals of the event was to commemorate the people who spent years researching, drilling, and preparing the groundwork for the modern mining center in Lublin region. Their scientific hypotheses, boreholes, and geological profiles eventually became one of the most important industrial investments in the area.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the Cechownia building of LW Bogdanka. It serves as a permanent reminder of those whose knowledge, work, and research courage initiated the story of Lublin coal. The ceremony took place at the end of May.

A resource for the future

The meeting also had a contemporary dimension. It reminded participants that the question of Lublin’s raw materials does not belong only to the past. Just as decades ago the courage of geologists and designers led to the creation of Bogdanka, today responsible exploration of the region’s resource potential remains a crucial element of planning for the future of the economy, energy, and state security.

Markowski noted that Bogdanka is the best example that Poland’s mining sector can combine tradition with modern efficiency. The mine has become a model for how domestic coal can support national energy independence while maintaining high environmental and safety standards.

The seminar reinforced the message that the Lubelskie Coal Basin is not merely a historical footnote but a living asset with significant untapped potential. As Poland navigates its energy transition, the knowledge and infrastructure built by generations of miners and geologists remain invaluable.
