Locomotive with smartphone-like apps: the future of rail according to Siemens

Siemens Mobility has unveiled the Vectron X, a new generation of highly digitized locomotives for freight and passenger transport, featuring a smart screen interface reminiscent of a smartphone. The locomotive was presented at the newly opened Rail Service Center in Munich-Allach on June 10, 2026.

Built on the proven Vectron platform, which has seen over 3,000 units sold since 2010, including 100 in Poland, the Vectron X introduces a leap forward in digitalization. It incorporates apps, open interfaces for third-party developers, and a central Smart Screen display that changes how train drivers interact with the machine.

The smart screen revolution

The most striking feature in the cab is the 11.6-inch Smart Screen, which displays operational data, route information, and external apps accessible through an App Store. This replaces the need for tablets or paper documents, a common sight in today’s locomotives. – The Smart Screen, apps, TrainPlay, and near-real-time connectivity significantly simplify operation and increase efficiency – said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility.

Another digital innovation is Remote Start, allowing the locomotive to be started remotely. This not only preconditions the cab temperature but also saves up to half an hour of driver time per shift, offering economic benefits for operators.

Connected and proactive maintenance

The Vectron X transmits operational data in near real-time, integrating with digital systems for early fault detection. This shifts maintenance from reactive to proactive, reducing unplanned downtime. – Vectron X combines the physical and digital worlds, bringing digital functions directly into the locomotive – added Rodenbeck.

The locomotive is part of the Siemens Xcelerator open digital business platform, which enables seamless integration of rolling stock, operations, services, and infrastructure. – Through Vectron X, we are expanding our leadership position in the European market and creating a scalable digital platform that grows with customer needs – said Michael Peter, CEO Siemens Mobility.

Service center expansion

Alongside the locomotive premiere, Siemens Mobility opened a modernized Rail Service Center in Munich-Allach. The facility triples service capacity from about 25 to 80 inspections per year, reducing turnaround time and improving fleet availability. – The new Rail Service Center is our competence center for Vectron locomotive maintenance and an important step in developing the European service network – said Elmar Zeiler, CEO Customer Services Siemens Mobility.

Siemens has also invested around €250 million in the entire plant, which employs 2,500 people. The center uses solutions like Railigent X for condition-based maintenance before the locomotive even arrives. Siemens Mobility plans to open its own service center in Poland in 2027.
