Spółka Restrukturyzacji Kopalń (SRK) has donated a 2,300-square-metre plot in Knurów to the local municipality. The city plans to build a connecting road, car parks and a small recreation zone, with a new railway stop also on the horizon. The transfer is part of a wider effort to turn former mining land into public infrastructure.
The plot, located on Niepodległości Street, was handed over free of charge. The city’s head of structural funds, Krzysztof Stryczek, said the municipality wants to start organising and cleaning up the area soon. The first step will be to rebuild the road linking the plot to the main street, create parking spaces and set up a small leisure area.
The city plans to co-finance the project with money from the Government Road Development Fund. Crucially, the land sits next to a railway line, which opens the door for a new commuter stop. Śląskie Railways are already planning to rebuild the station in this part of Knurów, and the SRK plot will help improve transport links in the neighbourhood.
Second donation in months for Knurów
This is not the first time SRK has supported the city. In February, the municipality received almost four hectares of post-mining land, also earmarked for road investments. The systematic transfer of such plots shows a steady shift from mining legacy to urban renewal.
SRK‘s core mission is to manage, reclaim and revitalise former mining areas. By donating land and infrastructure to local governments, the company creates what it calls “levers of development” – turning brownfields into public assets that can boost local economies and quality of life.
Broader trend across Silesia
Similar handovers have taken place in other Silesian towns as the region moves away from coal. The plots often become parks, business zones or transport hubs. In Knurów, the combination of a road project and a planned railway stop could significantly improve access to the city centre and attract new residents or businesses.
The municipality emphasises that the revitalisation process requires patience and coordination with multiple agencies. But with SRK‘s steady support, Knurów is turning a former mining void into a modern, functional space for its citizens.
