Pharmaceutical giant falls victim to cyberattack, personal data stolen

Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has fallen victim to a significant cyberattack. Hackers gained unauthorized access to internal IT systems and stole non-public data, including personal information. The company has reported the incident to the police, which has launched an investigation.

Novo Nordisk disclosed the breach in a statement, confirming that the attackers managed to copy some non-public data from its internal resources. – The incident has been reported to Danish authorities, including the police, which is conducting an investigation. We have activated internal procedures with the help of firms and experts specializing in cyberattacks to clarify the situation – the company said. The firm immediately implemented emergency measures and disconnected parts of its IT infrastructure to prevent further damage.

The company warned that restoring normal operations will be a time-consuming process, indicating the severity of the breach.

Scope of the attack

While Novo Nordisk has not disclosed the exact nature of the stolen data, it confirmed that personal data was among the compromised files. The company is working with cybersecurity experts to determine the full extent of the breach. The attack targeted internal systems, suggesting that the hackers aimed to access sensitive corporate and possibly patient-related information.

Novo Nordisk, founded in 1923, is a global leader in diabetes care and obesity treatment, known for blockbuster drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. With a market capitalization of approximately $195 billion (790 billion zlotys), it is one of Denmark’s most valuable companies. The scale of the attack has raised concerns about the security of critical pharmaceutical infrastructure.

Response and investigation

The Danish police are leading the investigation, collaborating with the company’s in-house security team and external forensic experts. Novo Nordisk assured that it is taking all necessary steps to protect affected individuals and comply with data protection regulations. The company has also notified relevant supervisory authorities.

The breach has prompted questions about patient data security. Novo Nordisk operates 20 factories in 12 countries, and the attack could have implications beyond its headquarters in Denmark. The company said it will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

Cyberattacks on pharmaceutical firms have become increasingly common, as the industry holds vast amounts of sensitive intellectual property and personal data. This incident underscores the growing threat to healthcare companies and the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
