Students at the Jan Paweł II High School in Złotoryja now have a modern space for learning science subjects. The school has received the third chemistry laboratory opened under the KGHM LAB programme, following facilities in Legnica and Bolesławiec, and it allows lessons to be built around experiments, observation and independent work instead of textbook theory alone.
The new room was fitted out with teaching aids, laboratory equipment and solutions that make chemistry classes both engaging and safe. Pupils can examine scientific phenomena at first hand, develop their research curiosity and acquire competences that will be useful to them in further education and in their future professional lives.
KGHM LAB is a pilot educational initiative run by KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. Its aim is to create spaces where young people learn through experience, observation and their own experiments. The laboratories built under the scheme support teachers in running more absorbing lessons and encourage teenagers to pursue their interests in the exact and natural sciences.
From textbook theory to hands-on experiments
The opening of the Złotoryja facility was accompanied by a statement from the copper producer’s representatives, who framed the project as a long-term investment in young people rather than a one-off donation.
Otwarcie pracowni w Złotoryi pokazuje, że wsparcie biznesu realnie wzmacnia lokalną edukację, tworząc warunki do rozwoju talentów blisko miejsca, w którym młodzi ludzie dorastają – powiedział Tomasz Półgrabski, Dyrektor Departamentu Komunikacji Społecznej i Sponsoringu KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
Once the official inauguration was over, the pupils took part in a meeting with Kornelia Olkucka, a rally driver and one of the scholarship holders of the Mistrzynie Sportu KGHM programme. The encounter was arranged to encourage young people to keep developing their own passions and interests outside the classroom.
Education in the company’s home towns
Support for education forms one of the important elements of KGHM’s approach to corporate social responsibility. The company has for years been involved in projects addressed to children and young people, backing schools, local educational initiatives and scholarship programmes, as well as activities that promote technical and environmental knowledge.
Particular weight is given to projects carried out in towns connected with the company’s operations and to the development of competences that a modern economy requires. The laboratory in Złotoryja is the third chemistry teaching space delivered under the pilot scheme, after Legnica and Bolesławiec.
