Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky will meet next Tuesday in Washington, according to Reuters, citing a White House official. The Ukrainian president’s visit to the United States was previously announced by MAGA activist Laura Loomer, who linked it to the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
The meeting comes amid ongoing negotiations over military support for Ukraine, including deliveries of Patriot missile systems and a drone agreement. While the White House has confirmed the date, Ukrainian services are still awaiting official confirmation from Trump’s administration, Reuters reports.
Laura Loomer, a conservative activist known for her previous skepticism toward the war in Ukraine, visited Kyiv on Thursday and conducted an interview with Zelensky. She had earlier stated that the conflict “did not concern her,” but later wrote on social media: – Looking back, it wasn’t very nice of me – said Laura Loomer, activist.
Funeral visit and diplomatic backdrop
Zelensky’s trip to the U.S. coincides with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal supporter of Ukraine and advocate for sanctions against Russia. Graham will be laid to rest on July 28 at the National Cathedral in Washington. Loomer first signaled the Ukrainian leader’s attendance at the ceremony.
On Wednesday, NATO envoy Matt Whitaker visited Kyiv to discuss deliveries of Patriot missiles and the specifics of a drone deal between Washington and Kyiv. That same day, Zelensky held a phone conversation with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both close to Trump.
Controversy over Loomer’s visit
Zelensky’s communications advisor Dmytro Lytvyn stated that the president’s office learned about Loomer’s visit from social media. Despite initial tensions, the Ukrainian presidency wrote on Tuesday: – It is truly important that Laura Loomer is in Ukraine and can see everything with her own eyes as it is – said the office of the president.
The encounter marks a notable shift in Loomer’s public stance. Previously a critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine, she now appears to have softened her position after witnessing the situation firsthand. The meeting between Trump and Zelensky, set for Tuesday, will be closely watched as a signal of future U.S. policy toward the war.
