The United States is moving to deepen its military-industrial partnership with Poland around the Abrams tank program, including plans for a new engine service hub and a wider role for Polish manufacturers. Warsaw, already the largest operator of these vehicles in Europe, is still considering purchases of up to 1,000 tanks.
Poland has been systematically expanding its fleet of American-built Abrams tanks. By the end of 2024, the Polish military had received 116 M1A1 tanks, while deliveries of 250 latest-generation M1A2 SEPv3 vehicles are scheduled to be completed in 2026.
Washington wants to tie Polish industry more closely into the Abrams program. According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, eight domestic companies currently produce 52 components used in the manufacture of Abrams tanks and their support vehicles. Both the number of firms involved and the range of parts are expected to grow in the coming years.
Why Warsaw has become a key customer
The scale of Poland’s planned armored-force expansion explains American interest. A scenario involving the purchase of as many as 1,000 tanks is still under consideration, making Poland one of the most important markets for the US defense industry.
Mariusz Cielma, editor-in-chief of Nowa Technika Wojskowa, told Dziennik Gazeta Prawna that the scale of planned purchases makes Poland an exceptionally attractive partner for Washington. In his assessment, the Americans are also counting on the signing of another deal covering an additional 300 Abrams tanks.
Service centers in Poznań and Dęblin
One concrete result of the closer cooperation is the US approval for a Regional Competence Center in Poznań. The facility has around 20,000 square meters of space and four cranes capable of lifting up to 50 tons, making it suitable for servicing heavy military equipment.
Another major project is the AGT1500 engine service center planned in Dęblin. The AGT1500 is the engine used in Abrams tanks. An agreement was signed on May 18 by Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze nr 1 and American firm Honeywell. Once the investment is running, Poland will be the only country in Europe with a full-service center for AGT1500 engines.
Patriot missiles on the agenda
Defense cooperation between Warsaw and Washington is not limited to tanks. Poland has also received preliminary approval from the US State Department to bring part of the production of PAC-3 missiles to the country. These missiles are used by Patriot air-defense systems.
