The Swiss military has reported an incident involving multiple unidentified drones flying in formation over a military base, raising concerns about hybrid warfare. The country’s top general, Benedikt Roos, confirmed the event and called for a complete review of critical infrastructure protection.
According to a statement from the Swiss Armed Forces, the incident took place last weekend over an undisclosed military facility. General Roos, the head of the Swiss armed forces, said the operator informed him that several drones were flying in a coordinated formation over the site. – It’s no joke. You need really advanced technology to be able to send a formation of drones over critical infrastructure. Then the drones disappeared and we don’t know who was behind it – Roos told the Swissinfo.ch portal.
The general added that Switzerland must now revise its entire catalogue of critical infrastructure. – We once thought that if we have a few guards, nobody would be able to get in here. Today the situation is completely different – he said.
A coordinated incursion
The Swiss army acknowledged that such drone activity is being systematically recorded across the country. Speaking to the public broadcaster SRF, military officials refused to disclose the exact location of the base, citing security reasons. – The observation concerns a military facility. We are not releasing further details. The army is increasingly detecting drones flying near units and military infrastructure – a military spokesperson stated.
Politicians from various parties have reacted with alarm. Andrea Gmur, a politician from the Centre Party, called the incident a coordinated action. – This must be taken very seriously. It was a coordinated action, like the ones we have seen in many other countries – Gmur said. She added that hybrid warfare has been underway for some time, and that Switzerland seems to have been unaware of it.
Political reaction and broader context
Franziska Roth, a member of the Social Democratic Party, said financial resources should be directed where the threat is greatest. – It has been proven that this is the case with drones – Roth stated. The incident comes amid a wider pattern across Europe, where unidentified drones have been spotted over key facilities for months. Experts suspect Russia is behind many of these activities, using drones as part of hybrid warfare tactics.
Until now, Switzerland had recorded only isolated cases of drone activity, which the Swissinfo.ch portal described as aimed at 'spying, causing panic or diverting attention’. The Swiss military is also considering establishing a no-fly zone for drones over military sites. The recent event has forced a reassessment of Swiss defense posture, with General Roos emphasizing the need to adapt to new methods of conducting hybrid warfare.
