Donald Tusk will pay an official visit to India on 21-23 October, joined by representatives of Poland’s development institutions and a business delegation spanning the defence, mining and technology sectors. The trip is the latest sign of a clear revival in Warsaw-New Delhi relations, and Polish companies are counting on it translating into a lasting commercial opening.
The Polish prime minister is due to meet his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, during the three-day programme. WNP reported in early September that the visit was in preparation; the dates and the shape of the delegation have now been confirmed.
The government side of the delegation will be made up of development institutions that form the so-called Team Poland, alongside business representatives. The centrepiece of the trip is the Polish-Indian Business Forum in New Delhi.
MoUs to be signed as Warsaw courts New Delhi
Strategic agreements and memoranda of understanding are to be signed by representatives of leading Polish industrial and technological companies, including the rolling stock producer PESA and the WB Group.
Organisers have identified the fields with the strongest potential for cooperation: defence and dual-use technologies, mining together with critical raw materials (CRM), agricultural technology and food processing, pharmaceuticals, and modern technologies and innovation.
During information sessions scheduled for 22 October, entrepreneurs will receive practical guidance on the expected free trade agreement between the European Union and India (EU-India FTA).
Bangalore, space and the defence track
On the second day of the visit, 23 October, the delegation heads to Bangalore, a city widely described as India’s technology capital. Representatives of the company Scanway and of the Polish Space Agency will appear there.
Study visits and matchmaking missions, addressed among others to the defence sector, are to run in parallel in the Indian capital. They form part of the same push to match Polish suppliers with Indian partners.
Polish firms have waited a long time for this kind of opening. The unresolved question is whether the political rapprochement between Warsaw and New Delhi will now be followed by a durable economic presence and a bigger footprint for Polish business in India.
