Turnaround in the defense industry: Large corporations lose value

The second quarter of 2026 brought a market correction for major European and American defense companies. After years of spectacular gains, investors are becoming more cautious, and stock prices are falling as earnings reports fail to meet inflated expectations.

Preliminary results for the April-June period show declining profits for many European defense contractors. The main cause is the immense financial burden of large-scale investment programs tied to NATO orders. While long-term contracts guarantee production stability, they require massive upfront spending, squeezing margins.

The shift in investor sentiment is stark. After three to four years of rallies that saw some stocks rise by several hundred percent, the market is now focusing on current financial performance rather than future promises. The euphoria over increased defense budgets and the EU’s SAFE loan instrument (150 billion euros for defense) has faded.

Rheinmetall and others feel the heat

The clearest example of this vulnerability is German giant Rheinmetall. A government decision to withdraw from a frigate construction project triggered a 30% drop in its share price. Other major players are also losing ground: Sweden’s SAAB, Italy’s Leonardo, Britain’s BAE Systems, and France’s Thales have all seen their valuations decline.

– Orders placed by NATO forces are a guarantee of continued production, but in many cases they require enormous financial effort – noted the Polish daily „Rzeczpospolita” in an analysis of the situation. The market is now punishing companies that fail to turn orders into quick profits.

New technology wins, legacy systems struggle

Not every defense stock is falling. The biggest winners are companies focused on cutting-edge technologies: combat drones, cybersecurity, and space-based systems. These segments enjoy higher margins and faster growth, attracting investors who are abandoning traditional heavy-armor and shipbuilding firms.

The European defense landscape is thus splitting into two camps. On one side, legacy contractors burdened by capital-intensive projects and long lead times. On the other, agile tech suppliers who can scale quickly and deliver immediate returns. The SAFE program, while boosting overall spending, has not shielded traditional giants from market discipline.

– We are witnessing a return to fundamental valuation, where current earnings matter more than future hope – commented a Warsaw-based analyst. The days of buying defense stocks blindly are over.
