The United States Mint will begin striking a gold one-dollar coin featuring the likeness of President Donald Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Wednesday. The coin commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence and is described as a symbol of „American values” and „the promise of a country dedicated to preserving liberty for all.”
The announcement, made on social media platform X, included an image of the new coin. Bessent wrote: „As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the @usmint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism.” He added: „Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a country devoted to preserving freedom for all.”
Shift from banknote to coin
Initially, the Trump administration planned to place his portrait on a special edition $250 banknote. However, U.S. law prohibits the depiction of living heads of state on paper currency. Congress has so far refused to amend the law, leading to the decision to issue a coin instead.
Earlier, officials announced that the president’s signature would appear on banknotes. Trump’s image has already been featured on special jubilee passport editions and on so-called „gold cards” that grant permanent residency in the U.S. after a one-million-dollar deposit.
Trump branding expands during bicentennial celebrations
The 250th anniversary of independence has become a backdrop for numerous Trump-branded initiatives. His name has appeared on a prescription drug portal and on investment accounts for newborn children. Last week, Palm Beach International Airport was officially renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport by state authorities in Florida.
– The coin is a tribute to the enduring legacy of liberty – said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in the statement. – It represents the strength of American values – he added.
Critics have questioned the appropriateness of placing a living president’s image on official coinage, noting that tradition has reserved such honors for figures like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Supporters argue the coin is a fitting tribute to a transformative leader.
