TotalEnergies has completed the sale of its entire portfolio of small-scale solar assets, totaling around 170 MW, in seven European countries. The French energy giant is divesting its distributed generation business to focus on large-scale solar and wind farms that offer better economies of scale.
The assets sold include rooftop installations and small ground-mounted systems under 3 MW. They were acquired by Amarenco and AMPYR Distributed Energy, which will continue to operate them to ensure a stable energy supply for existing customers.
The transaction covers France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the UK, and Luxembourg. TotalEnergies stated that the distributed generation model was no longer a strategic fit for the company’s renewable energy growth plans.
New strategy: big projects only
– We have decided to concentrate our renewable energy development on large-scale solar and wind projects that allow us to benefit from economies of scale and lower costs per megawatt – said a company spokesperson.
TotalEnergies emphasized that the sale will not slow down its overall renewable energy expansion. Over the past 12 months, the company has installed 8 GW of gross renewable capacity, reaching 35 GW by the end of March 2026.
The company now aims to maintain this pace and exceed 75 GW of gross renewable capacity by 2030. The shift away from small-scale solar reflects a broader industry trend where major utilities prioritize utility-scale projects over fragmented residential or commercial installations.
Market implications for european solar
The deal signals a maturing market for distributed solar in Europe. Amarenco and AMPYR Distributed Energy, both specialized in managing and expanding decentralized energy assets, see an opportunity to scale these portfolios through professional operation and aggregation.
– We will continue to operate the acquired assets and are committed to maintaining the same level of service for all customers who have contracts with TotalEnergies – said a representative of the acquiring consortium.
TotalEnergies has not disclosed the financial details of the transaction. However, the move aligns with the group’s broader strategy of reallocating capital to large-scale projects where it can achieve higher returns and greater impact on decarbonization targets.
