Volkswagen has a new star among its petrol engines. The 1.5 TSI unit, often called the 'new 1.9 TDI’ by drivers and mechanics, is gaining praise for combining low fuel consumption with good performance. This modern engine is now one of the most common powertrains in the Volkswagen Group’s lineup.
The 1.5 TSI replaced older TSI units and brought several improvements. It is offered mainly in 130 hp and 150 hp versions and can be found in models such as the Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Škoda Octavia, Superb, and Seat Leon. One key change was replacing the timing chain with a belt, which eliminated many problems known from earlier engines.
Why is it called the 'new 1.9 TDI’?
The original 1.9 TDI diesel engine became a legend for its durability, reliability, and low fuel consumption. The 1.5 TSI is earning a similar reputation in the petrol world. In everyday driving, cars with this engine consume between 5.5 and 7 liters of petrol per 100 km. On a calm highway run, consumption can drop below 5 l/100 km.
– The engine is often called the new 1.9 TDI – reported by Autokult. This comparison highlights its balance of efficiency and robustness, although the two units are completely different in design.
Not without flaws
Despite positive opinions, the 1.5 TSI is not perfect. Common reported issues include carbon buildup on intake valves (typical for direct injection engines), problems with the cylinder deactivation system, and occasional turbocharger failures. Nonetheless, the engine is still considered one of the most successful modern petrol constructions.
On the used car market, many ex-fleet vehicles with this engine have accumulated 300,000 to 400,000 km and remain in active service. This real-world longevity strengthens the 'indestructible’ nickname.
