Siemens Mobility has secured a contract to supply 61 Mireo Plus B battery-electric trains for the North Westphalia rail network in Germany. The deal includes a comprehensive full-service maintenance agreement that may last up to 30 years, ensuring near-perfect availability and cost-efficient operation.
The project is carried out in cooperation with Rock Rail, a British rolling stock financing and management company, and the Westfalen-Lippe Local Transport Authority (NWL). The new battery-electric multiple units are scheduled to enter service from December 2029. Siemens Mobility will take full responsibility for fleet maintenance, aiming for availability close to 100 percent.
Full-service maintenance as a market standard
– Our full-service approach takes over the complete maintenance of the Mireo Plus B fleet in the North Westphalia network, ensuring nearly uninterrupted availability for many years – said Elmar Zeiler, CEO Customer Service at Siemens Mobility. He added that this creates the basis for efficient and economical operation while contributing significantly to decarbonisation of rail transport in Westphalia.
Under the contract, Siemens Mobility will handle the entire lifecycle of the trains. Maintenance covers preventive, corrective and predictive actions, supported by data analysis and digital solutions, including the Railigent X system. This allows condition-based maintenance, reducing downtime, optimising service processes and lowering operational costs.
Battery-electric technology and passenger comfort
The Mireo Plus B trains draw power from overhead lines on electrified sections and run emission-free on non-electrified routes using battery power. They feature intelligent energy management and regenerative braking. Passengers will benefit from Wi-Fi, numerous charging sockets, accessible entrances and spacious multi-functional areas.
Contracts combining train delivery with maintenance are becoming a standard in the railway market. In November 2025, PKP Intercity finalised a record deal with Alstom worth nearly PLN 6.9 billion for the supply and 30-year maintenance of 42 double-deck Coradia Max trains. Earlier, in 2011, a 17-year service agreement was made for the Pendolino purchase. In 2013, PKP Intercity ordered 20 FLIRT electric multiple units from the Stadler Polska and Newag consortium, with Stadler also responsible for 15-year technical maintenance.
