Seven green auctions in Poland: nearly PLN 25 billion up for grabs

Poland’s energy regulator has announced seven auctions for the sale of renewable electricity this year, with support possibly covering just over 76 TWh of green power worth close to PLN 25 billion. The tenders will be held between 2 and 10 November 2026, according to a schedule agreed with the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

The Energy Regulatory Office (URE) divided the money between technology baskets. Solar photovoltaics and onshore wind received the bulk of the allocation – 64.5 TWh valued at a little more than PLN 17.9 billion, as the regulator’s announcement shows.

The single largest pool, amounting to 53.25 TWh, was reserved for a shared basket covering large photovoltaic farms and onshore wind projects with capacity above 1 MW. Bidding for that category will close the whole exercise: auction AZ/7/2026 is set for 10 November 2026.

Price criterion and only new installations

URE confirmed that the 2026 auctions will follow the formula used so far, meaning that price remains the deciding factor in selecting winners.

– This year’s RES auctions will be conducted under the existing rules, that is, based on the price criterion – URE stated.

Competition is open only to so-called new installations, in line with a regulation of the Council of Ministers dated 27 September 2022 on support for renewable energy sources. Existing facilities therefore cannot enter the bidding.

Reference prices frozen at 2023 levels

The maximum prices that bidders may offer were set years ago, in a regulation issued by the Minister of Climate and Environment on 8 November 2023, and they will stay unchanged for this round. Because that date is already distant, WNP asked the ministry whether the 2023 regulation would still apply or whether new reference prices were coming first.

– We do not plan to change the reference prices before this year’s auctions. We do confirm, however, that work is under way to designate new reference prices, whose announcement is planned for this calendar year or the beginning of the next one – the Ministry of Climate and Environment told WNP.

The seven tenders will be spread across nine days in November, with the largest contracts for big solar and onshore wind farms awarded on the final day of the schedule.
