Russian drones hit Zaporizhzhia, five wounded and buildings damaged

At least five people were wounded overnight when Russian drones hit Zaporizhzhia, leaving two residential tower blocks, a university and a shopping centre damaged. Emergency crews are still clearing the aftermath at the strike sites.

The head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, Ivan Fedorov, described the scale of the destruction caused by unmanned aerial vehicles during the night attack.

– The enemy attacked Zaporizhzhia with unmanned aerial vehicles. As a result of the attack, two residential high-rise buildings were damaged. Their facades were destroyed, windows were blown out and balconies were damaged – said Fedorov.

Fedorov added that a university and a shopping centre were also damaged, and that cars went up in flames. The residential high-rises were among the hardest-hit targets, with blast damage visible across their exteriors.

The casualty count grows from one to five

The first reports from local authorities mentioned a single victim: a 52-year-old man who suffered burns and was taken into doctors’ care. At 5:15 a.m. officials updated the figure to five people injured.

Four residents were hurt in one of the apartment blocks, and one more person was injured in the other building. Three men and two women are among the wounded. Part of the residents were evacuated from the damaged high-rises.

Ukrainska Pravda, citing preliminary information, reported that one of the strikes landed on the Intrade shopping centre.

State Emergency Service units of Ukraine, medical teams and other services are working at the impact sites, where the consequences of the Russian strike are being removed.

Zelensky calls for pressure and diplomacy

The overnight attack was the second in recent days to hit a retail site in Zaporizhzhia, after Russian forces struck the Amstor shopping centre on Thursday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the situation in Zaporizhzhia in a post on X.

– We must continue to pressure the aggressor to end this war. Every response and far-reaching sanctions are pressure that really works, and the world feels it. But at the same time diplomacy must work. At the UN General Assembly we will talk about how to reach peace through joint efforts. This is the main task that all leaders should be dealing with – wrote Zelensky.

The president also said Russia carried out a total of ten attacks on Ukrainian regions on Sunday evening and overnight. Three more people were injured, and one woman lost her life in Lozova.
