Military analyst Robert Fox warns that three signals indicate Vladimir Putin is gearing up for an intensified assault on Europe, potentially as soon as September. The upcoming weeks are decisive for the Kremlin’s war strategy in Ukraine, as the conflict enters its fourth year.
In a commentary for The Independent, Fox argues that Russia has fully transformed into a war economy, with Putin embracing the role of a wartime leader. Peace is not an option for him, as it threatens his political survival. This mindset could trigger drastic actions, including a large-scale offensive aimed at breaking Ukrainian resistance and testing NATO’s resolve. Recent intelligence indicates Russia is stockpiling missiles and drones near the border for a potential campaign.
Signs of escalation
Fox highlights the possibility of partial or full mobilization in Russia, aiming to recruit at least 500,000 new soldiers. Such a step would likely be accompanied by the imposition of a state of war across the country, tightening government control and further militarizing society. This would mark a significant escalation, as previous mobilizations were limited in scope.
– Russia functions as a war economy, and Putin has become a war leader. Peace has no place in his vision of his own political survival – Fox stated.
Implications for Europe
If mobilization and martial law are enacted, Kyiv and its Baltic neighbors would need to urgently upgrade their air defense systems. The analyst stressed that all European NATO allies must take this threat seriously and prepare for a potential direct confrontation with Moscow. Poland, due to its strategic location and support for Ukraine, would be particularly vulnerable.
– Then Kyiv, as well as its Baltic neighbors, will have to seriously consider their own air defense. This applies to all European allies in NATO – Fox added.
The prolonged war dragging into winter could push Putin toward even more radical decisions. European capitals cannot afford to underestimate the risk. NATO must accelerate defense planning, increase military readiness, and invest in air and missile defense to deter any aggression. The coming weeks will test the unity and preparedness of the Western alliance.
