A breakdown of signaling equipment between Warsaw Wschodnia and Warszawa Centralna stations caused severe disruptions on Wednesday afternoon, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded on platforms. The incident is part of a broader punctuality crisis, as only 58 percent of PKP Intercity trains reached their destinations on time in June, according to data cited by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
The failure of traffic control devices hit during peak summer travel, compounded by thunderstorms in southern Poland and the return of crowds from a Bad Bunny concert in Warsaw. Many travelers reported being unable to get a mobile signal at the central station due to the sheer volume of people.
June punctuality at historic lows
June’s punctuality figure of 58 percent is nearly as bad as January’s 53.4 percent, when snowstorms and frost crippled operations. – In terms of punctuality, it was a month almost as disastrous as January, when railway workers struggled with blizzards and frost – reported Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
The main culprit in June was a late-month heatwave that caused problems with traction power supply, overheating of overhead wires leading to short circuits, and multiple rolling stock failures. The combination of extreme weather and aging infrastructure brought the network to the brink.
Summer chaos expected to continue
According to the daily, disruptions are likely to persist with increased intensity through the end of August. Only after the summer peak travel season ends should the situation improve. The Warsaw meltdown on Wednesday illustrated how quickly normal holiday traffic can spiral into chaos when even a single technical failure occurs.
The signaling failure between the two main Warsaw stations forced dozens of trains to halt or run with major delays. The incident also highlighted the fragility of the capital’s rail corridor, a critical artery for both regional and long-distance connections. Passengers waited for hours, with some eventually abandoning their journeys.
Railway authorities have not yet provided a detailed timeline for repairing the damaged equipment or a comprehensive plan to prevent similar breakdowns during the remaining summer weeks. Meanwhile, travelers are advised to check current schedules and allow extra time for their trips.
