Prosecutors raid Fidesz server facility without warning, party says

Fidesz, Hungary’s opposition party, announced on Tuesday that prosecutors conducted an unannounced raid on its server facility, aiming to seize the party’s communication system and databases. The party described the action as the first such case since 1990, calling it an unprecedented political attack.

– Investigators from the prosecutor’s office appeared without notice in the building housing Fidesz’s servers, intending to seize the entire party communication system and databases – said Bertalan Havasi, director of communication for Fidesz, in a statement to the MTI news agency. The statement was also published on the party’s Facebook profile.

Fidesz accused the ruling Tisza party of Prime Minister Peter Magyar of trying to eliminate the opposition legally after failing politically. – The plan of the Tisza party, to eliminate Fidesz and with it the resistance to tyranny, ended in failure. Therefore, Tisza is now trying to bring about a legal blockade of Fidesz – the party stated. According to Fidesz, no similar incident has occurred in Hungary since 1990, highlighting the severity of the move.

Magyar responds to raid allegations

Prime Minister Peter Magyar commented on the developments on social media. – According to Fidesz’s own information, investigators conducted a search and seizure of Viktor Orbán’s party property today. We are waiting for a statement from the prosecutor’s office – wrote Magyar. His brief response did not confirm or deny the operation, leaving the matter pending official confirmation from the authorities. The prosecutor’s office has not yet issued a public statement regarding the raid.

The raid unfolded against a backdrop of intense political rivalry between the two parties. Fidesz governed Hungary for over a decade under Viktor Orbán until losing the 2024 parliamentary election to Magyar’s Tisza party. Since then, the opposition has frequently accused the new government of using state institutions to target political opponents, a charge Magyar denies.

Unprecedented legal action since 1990

Fidesz emphasized that the raid marks a departure from the post-communist norm in Hungary. The party recalled that even during the turbulent years of the 1990s, no prosecutor’s office had raided the premises of a political party. – This is a dangerous escalation of political conflict in the country – the party added. Legal experts in Hungary have yet to comment on the legality of the operation, while the opposition calls for transparency.

The development raises questions about the independence of the judiciary in Hungary, a topic that has been a point of contention between Budapest and the European Union. Fidesz has vowed to fight the seizure of its data and communication systems through all available legal means.
