Prime minister change in autumn? The surprising candidate

According to “Rzeczpospolita”, a possible change of prime minister is being discussed in informal talks in case the ruling coalition’s support continues to drop. The surprising candidate to replace Donald Tusk is Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, a secretary of state in the Ministry of National Defence who enjoys the trust of both Tusk and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

During the summer break, the Civic Coalition plans to weather the storm caused by the South Hospital affair, the daily reports. Party officials hope that temporary measures in healthcare proposed by the health minister will help, but if the polls show a deeper decline, more profound changes could take place in autumn.

– I know that today this seems like a scenario from political fiction, but this variant is being considered – a person close to the government told “Rz”.

A candidate with cross-party appeal

Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka served as undersecretary of state for European affairs in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister between 2024 and 2026, and in 2025 she became the government’s plenipotentiary for the SAFE program. Earlier this year she was appointed secretary of state in the Ministry of National Defence.

She is highly rated in terms of substantive knowledge, rhetorical skills and public image. Sources indicate she enjoys the confidence not only of Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who maintains good relations with Donald Tusk, but also of the current prime minister himself.

Historical parallels and challenges

Professor Jarosław Flis from the Jagiellonian University sees the candidacy as interesting and not to be underestimated. – When Ewa Kopacz took over from Tusk, PiS was leading in the polls, and the new prime minister managed to restore the party’s fortunes. It was only Bronisław Komorowski’s defeat that brought the Civic Platform down – he recalled.

The potential move would aim to revitalise the coalition and stop the erosion of support. Meanwhile, analysts note that any change carries risks, especially if the new leader fails to quickly improve the government’s image and deliver tangible results.
