Bałtycki Terminal Kontenerowy (BCT) in the Port of Gdynia has officially launched a new handling infrastructure, marking a key milestone in the terminal’s modernisation. The new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, with a lifting height of 55 metres and a reach capable of serving the biggest container vessels entering the Baltic Sea, will significantly boost operational capacity.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Friday, 26 June, with representatives from the government, the Port of Gdynia Authority, local authorities, business partners and terminal clients in attendance. The investment is part of a broader strategy to develop the port’s logistics base for clients from Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
Wojciech Szumielewicz, CEO of BCT, said the new infrastructure changes the terminal’s operational possibilities and the entire Port of Gdynia. – Today we are no longer talking only about an infrastructure investment, but about a change in the operational capabilities of the terminal and the entire Port of Gdynia. The new infrastructure allows us to respond even better to the needs of clients expecting efficient, predictable and modern logistics solutions. We want Gdynia to be a natural choice for companies seeking a stable and competitive logistics partner in the Baltic region – he added.
Strategic importance for the region
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka described the event as a new chapter in the port’s history. – This is a new chapter in the port of Gdynia – he said during the ceremony. Port officials stressed that the development of terminal infrastructure today has both business and strategic significance, especially in the context of ongoing investments around the port, such as the construction of the Red Road, dual-use infrastructure projects and programmes related to national security and the defence industry.
Piotr Gorzeński, President of the Port of Gdynia Authority, emphasised the port’s readiness for demanding operations. – For many years we have been consistently developing the infrastructure of the Port of Gdynia and strengthening its operational potential. Today’s launch of the new cranes is a symbolic culmination of one of the most important stages of this process. Thanks to the investments carried out, Gdynia is now ready to serve the most demanding clients and modern logistics operations – he stated.
The project also includes eight yard cranes and other equipment. The total value of the investment is 322.4 million PLN, with EU co-financing of 128.9 million PLN, sourced from the National Recovery Plan under the project 'Equipment of the BCT intermodal terminal with modern handling devices’.
Record breakbulk and future plans
The new cranes are expected to improve handling efficiency, streamline logistics operations and reduce ship and cargo turnaround times. Terminal representatives highlighted that the investment responds to growing market demands and changes in European maritime logistics. The parallel development of the ports of Gdynia and Gdańsk strengthens the security and resilience of Polish and regional supply chains.
During the event, BCT and Port of Gdynia officials presented future development directions, including expansion of the logistics base, increased intermodal potential and further investments to strengthen operational capabilities. In 2025, the Port of Gdynia handled over 1 million TEU for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 5.27 percent.
