Polish tourist found dead in High Tatras after suspected fall

A 38-year-old Polish tourist has been found dead in the High Tatras. Slovak rescuers suspect the man fell from the southeastern summit of Baranie Rogi, but poor weather meant his body could only be recovered a day later.

The discovery was made on Sunday by Czech tourists, who immediately alerted the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service. The body was lying on a rocky scree below Barania Baszta, which led rescuers to believe that the Pole had fallen from the slope of Baranie Rogi’s southeastern summit.

When HZS rescuers arrived at the location, they talked to the companions of the deceased. They explained that they had gone with the 38-year-old to Baranie Rogi, a double summit towering more than 2,500 metres above sea level. The group separated in the upper parts of the summit area, and after several hours the companions launched a search for their partner.

Despite the body being located on Sunday, the rescuers were unable to recover it that day. A helicopter could not take off because of the weather, so the remains had to wait until Monday morning. The operation was carried out the next day, and the body was transported to Starý Smokovec.

Recovery was postponed due to bad weather

The rescue service had received the report on Sunday, but the conditions in the High Tatras were not suitable for an air evacuation. HZS waited for conditions to improve and finally brought the body down on Monday. The whole action ended with the transfer of the remains to Starý Smokovec.

In a separate case described on Wednesday, Polsat News reported another fatal accident in the Tatras. Slovak rescuers responded to a call involving a 59-year-old Polish man who had complained of chest pain. Witnesses said he went into sudden cardiac arrest, lost consciousness and hit his head in the fall.

Another fatal case in the Tatras

People who witnessed the incident immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A helicopter carrying a doctor and an HZS rescuer was sent to the scene, and staff from Chata pod Rysami brought an automated external defibrillator. The medical team continued advanced resuscitation, using the defibrillator, but the man’s vital functions could not be restored and a doctor confirmed his death.
