A Polish MP who spent the night in Kyiv witnessed a Russian missile attack that killed 14 people and wounded 27 in the Kyiv region. Paweł Kowal, a Civic Coalition lawmaker, described a night of rockets, sirens and fires in social media posts.
Kowal wrote that he had spent the night in the Ukrainian capital and watched as Russian strikes hit the city. People were sheltering in underground crossings, walls shook continuously, smoke appeared over buildings, trains were evacuated, and fires burned until morning.
– People were crowded in underground passages. Constant rocket strikes, trembling walls, sirens, smoke here and there over the city, evacuation of trains, fires lasted until morning – wrote Kowal.
Residents spent the night texting loved ones to ask if they were safe. The next morning, according to Kowal, came the information about human losses: 14 people died in the Kyiv region and 27 were injured.
– Eternal shame to the aggressor – Russia for this entire war and every attack during it, and most of all for every innocent victim – wrote Kowal.
Meeting with Ukrainian parliament speaker
During his stay in Kyiv, Kowal met Ruslan Stefanchuk, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. The Polish MP posted a video showing their greeting, thanked him for the conversation and said they discussed joint parliamentary plans for the coming months and the approaching anniversary of Poland’s diplomatic recognition of Ukraine.
– We talked about plans for parliamentary cooperation for the next months and about the 35th anniversary of Poland recognizing independent Ukraine as the first country in the world – said Kowal.
Kowal also shared a photo of Kyiv’s night panorama. It showed burning buildings in the background and heavy smoke hanging over the city.
Zelensky: higher toll and appeal for ballistic defense
President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a higher death toll after the attack. According to his report, 17 people were killed and 44 were wounded. Kyiv’s military administration said Russian ballistic missiles struck seven city districts.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a warehouse near the centre was destroyed. Rescue teams pulled two people out of the ruins. Fires broke out in several places, and one of the strikes caused an ammonia leak.
– The main targets of the attack were warehouse facilities belonging to civilian enterprises. There were also attacks on infrastructure and the railway station. These objects had nothing in common with the war – a brewery, building materials warehouses and civilian logistics facilities – said Zelensky.
Zelensky urged allies to accelerate deliveries of ballistic defense systems. He argued that delays directly lead to horrifying casualties and destruction. He also called on countries that cannot take a more active role in deliveries to impose new sanctions on Russia.
