Poland has enough gas for winter? Other countries may envy us

Poland’s gas storage facilities, managed by Gas Storage Poland, have already exceeded 70% capacity, far ahead of the 60% target set for early July. As of July 1, 2026, the installations held around 26.2 TWh of natural gas, equivalent to about 2.3 billion cubic meters of fuel. This places Poland among the European leaders in gas reserves, alongside Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

The high level of filling confirms an advanced stage of preparation for the winter season. It is the result of cooperation among gas market participants, which translates into strengthening the country’s energy security. Observing the growing market demand for storage services, Gas Storage Poland is aiming to expand storage capacities, as noted by Karina Szostak, president of the company.

„This will allow for greater flexibility of the services provided and further active support of the energy transition, including system balancing,” – said Karina Szostak, president of Gas Storage Poland. She added that the expansion of storage facilities will also enable Poland to realize its ambitions as a gas hub for this part of Europe, of which gas storage is a key element.

Changing supply structure and energy transition

Poland’s shift in gas supply sources and the ongoing energy transition are changing the operating profile of storage facilities. They will require increasingly flexible services. One of the directions in Gas Storage Poland’s strategy adopted this year is to adapt infrastructure to the forecasted growth in demand for storage services, which after 2030 may significantly exceed current capacities.

„As a gas storage system operator, we are strengthening operational readiness and organizational resilience, ensuring the safety and continuity of infrastructure functioning in the face of growing challenges and geopolitical uncertainty,” – added Szostak.

On July 1, 2026, the filling of storage facilities managed by Gas Storage Poland significantly exceeded two-thirds of the available capacity. This is not only higher than the EU average but also higher than in the same period last year. On July 1, 2025, the filling level was about 64%.

Poland among European leaders

The current high level of over 70% places Poland among the leaders in Europe, alongside countries like Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Meanwhile, the average filling level for the entire European Union as of June 30, 2026, was about 49%. Gas Storage Poland is a 100% subsidiary of Gaz-System, responsible for providing storage capacity and power in a way that meets market needs and ensures efficient use.

Poland’s strong position in gas reserves is a result of strategic investments and diversification of supply sources. The country has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian gas, expanding LNG terminal capacity and building new interconnectors with neighbors. This, combined with robust storage infrastructure, gives Poland a comfortable cushion for the coming winter months, even in case of supply disruptions or exceptionally cold weather.
