Poland is one of the most vulnerable countries to Russian sabotage operations, experts assess. The Kremlin has already launched attacks aimed at destabilizing the country, and the intensity may rise in the near future. Warsaw’s role as a key hub for Western aid to Ukraine makes it a prime target.
Prosecutors have no doubt that a fire at a large retail hall on Marywilska Street in Warsaw was not an accident. Investigators say the blaze was a deliberate arson carried out by individuals acting on behalf of or in the interest of Russia.
– Collected evidence points to an intentional arson. An international criminal group cooperating with Russian special services was involved – said Prosecutor General’s spokesman Przemysław Nowak. Charges have been brought against two people. One was arrested in Lithuania and is in temporary custody there. The other remains on Russian territory, which for now prevents completion of extradition proceedings.
Phantom of Marywilska: a case of state-sponsored arson
Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Bejda stated that Poland remains one of the key areas of interest for Russian intelligence services and one of the main directions for potential sabotage operations by Moscow. In a response to a parliamentary interpellation, he indicated that the risk of sabotage acts in the coming years will remain high, and in some scenarios may even increase.
Major Robert Cheda, a former officer of the Polish Intelligence Agency, shares this assessment. He told Dziennik Gazeta Prawna that Poland continues to be a priority target for Russian destabilisation operations. According to him, weakening Poland’s position would help Moscow break European unity and build influence through bilateral relations. The Kremlin, he added, aims to deepen social tensions and political divisions.
Poland as the frontline of hybrid warfare
The former intelligence officer stressed that Russia may continue to use sabotage as a tool to undermine public trust in state institutions. He noted that Poland now finds itself in a demanding and unstable security environment, and rising tensions may foster further destabilisation operations.
Poland’s geopolitical significance stems from its location on NATO’s eastern flank and its central role in coordinating European military and humanitarian support for Ukraine. Any disruption of Polish infrastructure or political stability would directly affect the alliance’s ability to respond to Russian aggression.
