Poland charges ahead: PLN 1.26 billion for green trucking grid

Polish distribution system operators have secured more than PLN 1.264 billion in public co-financing to expand the power grid for high-capacity charging stations serving heavy transport. The move is meant to accelerate the electrification of trucking and logistics, with Enea Operator’s CEO describing the agreements as a booster for the country’s economy.

The contracts were signed at the start of this week by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) with PGE, Enea, Tauron and Energa. Charging points will be built along the TEN-T corridors, and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways coordinated where they will be placed. An average gap of 60 kilometres between stations is assumed in the programme.

– This agreement is important for all distribution system operators who signed it, because it has an absolutely universal nature. A network of charging stations, or the entire distribution infrastructure for charging stations, shares a common identity. This agreement is a success that will give an impulse to the development of electromobility in Poland – said Marek Szymankiewicz, president of Enea Operator.

Infrastructure for a new transport market

The CEO stressed that charging availability will be one of the key factors deciding how quickly electromobility grows. The financing targets heavy transport, so stations will be installed at major roads across the country. In his view, the programme will stimulate strategic sectors such as transport and logistics while supporting environmental protection.

Szymankiewicz also noted that light transport and chargers for passenger cars are a completely different segment, with different capacity requirements. City bus charging, used by local government units, is yet another matter. He added that the market should prepare slightly different products for each of these portfolios.

– As for network issues, distribution system operators focused on the purely technological and energy scope. Logistics and the choice of locations for charging stations were coordinated by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Of course, we assume an average distance of 60 km between stations. I think this is a good beginning for the development of this infrastructure – he explained.

Transformation 2.0 and dynamic tariffs

In the interview, the Enea Operator chief pointed to the next stage of the energy transition. Until now, the debate had revolved mainly around connecting renewable sources. That step, dubbed Transformation 1.0, has already been completed at the company. The current goal is to use renewable energy as efficiently as possible alongside other sources.

– We want no electron produced by RES at low variable costs to be wasted; instead it should power the Polish economy – Szymankiewicz declared.

Generation and connection are one side of the coin, he said, while energy consumption is the other. The key is to synchronise both sides. That means creating energy sales products and dynamic distribution tariffs that allow customers to use electricity at lower cost during periods of abundance and low prices. Enea Operator has already introduced almost 14 dynamic tariffs.

– They must be, absolutely. Today, with a high degree of probability, the output of renewable energy sources can be predicted. In dynamic tariffs, recommended consumption hours do not change every day; they remain stable for a certain period. A company can make predictions in such a way as to arrange its work rhythm, taking into account low energy prices – he said.

The topic of energy transformation will be discussed at the Energy Days conference, scheduled for 30 September to 1 October 2026 at the International Congress Centre in Katowice.
