Play and statkraft strengthen polish renewable energy partnership with expanded ppa

Statkraft, the norwegian state-owned renewable energy producer operating in Poland, and Play, one of the country’s leading mobile network operators, have announced a major expansion of their power purchase agreement. The extended contract will nearly double the volume of green electricity delivered over the next decade, combining solar and wind power for the first time.

The original 10-year PPA signed in 2024 has been extended by three years, now running until the end of 2037. Under the new terms, Statkraft will increase its annual electricity supply to Play from the previously contracted level to 51 GWh starting from 1 January 2027. This translates to an additional 290 GWh of renewable energy over the full contract period.

Wind power joins the portfolio

Until now, Play’s renewable energy supply under the PPA came exclusively from a 36 MW solar farm located in Resko, northwestern Poland. The expanded agreement adds electricity from the Korytnica 2 wind farm, situated on the border of Korytnica and Wierzbno municipalities in Masovian Voivodeship. The combination of solar and wind generation provides a more balanced and reliable supply profile.

– By combining different renewable technologies in our portfolio, we can flexibly tailor PPAs to client needs. This expanded partnership gives Play long-term cost predictability and supports its decarbonization targets – said Kornel Koronowski, Head of Origination Poland at Statkraft.

Strategic benefits for a leading telecom

For Play, the extended PPA is a key element of its energy management strategy. Mixing solar with wind increases resource diversification and reduces exposure to market volatility.

– That diversification improves our resilience to market fluctuations and allows us to manage risk more effectively – commented Beata Zborowska, Member of the Management Board and Chief Financial Officer of Play Group. – Equally important, long-term contracts of this type create an impulse for further development of renewable energy sources and support the achievement of climate goals across the entire economy – she added.

The announcement comes as Poland continues to accelerate its renewable energy rollout, driven by corporate demand for stable, green electricity. Statkraft, which opened its Warsaw office in 2022, has been actively expanding its presence in the Polish market through both investments and long-term off-take agreements.
