Pension can be higher by several hundred zlotys. A common document is enough

Many Poles still keep old paper ID books from the communist era. Few realize that these documents can now be used to increase their monthly pension by several hundred zlotys. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) confirms that obsolete booklets with employment stamps are valid evidence for recalculating benefits.

The plastic ID cards we use today replaced the green paper booklets years ago. Yet those old documents often contain detailed records of jobs held before 1999, including salary data and employer stamps. ZUS points out that anyone who still has such a booklet can apply for a fresh calculation of their initial pension capital, which directly affects the final monthly payout.

To be accepted, the documents must be legible and allow clear confirmation of employment periods and earnings. If the entries are damaged or blurred, their use may be limited. Importantly, the right to request a recalculation does not expire, so the application can be submitted at any time, regardless of how long ago the pension was granted.

How old booklets help boost pensions

Paper ID booklets were the standard document for decades in Poland. They include stamps and handwritten notes that prove when and where a person worked, as well as how much they earned. ZUS treats these as official records for calculating the initial capital – the base sum used to determine the final pension amount. Every additional documented month of work can raise that base.

– If someone finds a booklet confirming a previously unrecorded period of employment, they can have that period added to their capital – a ZUS spokesperson explained. – This can increase the monthly benefit by a hundred or even several hundred zlotys, depending on the length of the period and the salary earned.

Simple online procedure from March 2026

Since March 13, 2026, the entire process has become easier. Most formalities can now be handled online through the ZUS electronic platform. The required form is called ERPO, which is available for people already receiving an old-age pension or a disability pension. No paper documents need to be mailed – scanned copies of the booklet pages are sufficient if they are clear.

The recalculation is not automatic; the beneficiary must submit the application themselves. ZUS advises checking any old family archives, attics, or safety deposit boxes for the green booklets. Many families still have them stored away, unaware of their potential financial value. The process is free of charge and can be initiated even years after retirement.
