The signing of agreements for access to the FSRU 2 floating LNG terminal has become a turning point on Poland’s gas market. With those contracts, the Orlen monopoly on gas infrastructure has symbolically ended, and Unimot, Poland’s largest independent energy group, is among the main beneficiaries.
Unimot, through agreements with Gaz-System, has obtained 12 regasification slots in each calendar year for 15 years, starting from 2030. The total value of the contracts is PLN 2,109 million, which secures gas deliveries until 2044.
The contracts were signed within the Open Season FSRU-2 procedure conducted by Gaz-System. The second floating FSRU is to be located near Gdańsk, and the planned service period is 2030-2044.
Orlen’s grip on Pomeranian infrastructure loosens
Unimot, together with PGE and Enea, has ended the previous monopoly of Orlen, formerly PGNiG, in using gas infrastructure in Pomerania. The shared facilities include the LNG terminal in Świnoujście, the first FSRU in Gdańsk, due at the turn of 2027 and 2028, the second twin unit planned for 2029, and the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline.
– National energy security is built through investments in flexible infrastructure and diversified supply directions. As an independent Polish multi-energy group, we want to be an active partner in building a secure Poland, alongside other key market participants. Obtaining regasification capacity strengthens our position on the natural gas market and is an important element of Unimot’s long-term strategy, which assumes development in energy transformation and building a supply system resistant to disruptions – said Karol Ilba, president of the management board of Unimot Energia i Gaz.
Long-term access to FSRU 2 regasification capacity is of strategic importance for Unimot’s gas and LNG business. Cooperation with Gaz-System gives the group many years of access to key import infrastructure and increases the flexibility of supply sources.
Gas sales up 80 percent
Unimot has been expanding its gas business at a fast pace. In the first quarter of 2026, natural gas sales rose by about 80 percent year on year to 1.6 TWh. This growth was clearly higher than the increase in domestic gas consumption and the dynamics of main wholesale market segments.
LNG is one of Unimot’s key development areas in energy transformation. The FSRU 2 agreements operate in a regulated tariff model, in which rates are approved by the President of the Energy Regulatory Office. The cost-plus methodology ensures predictable settlement conditions for the entire term of the contracts.
– We must do everything for the gas market to function well in Poland: to provide security, build the strength of our economy in the region and, very importantly, exert pressure on wholesale gas prices and, as a result, retail prices – stressed Wrochna.
The inclusion of new players in Poland’s gas infrastructure raises hopes for a genuinely competitive market. Cheaper fuel for end customers is expected to follow as the monopoly position disappears.
