An unidentified aerial object entered Polish airspace early Thursday morning and crashed in the Lublin region, triggering air raid sirens in several districts. Military analysts say the debris and impact crater are consistent with a Russian cruise missile, likely from the Kh-101 family.
Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces reported that at 3:40 AM local time, radar systems detected an unknown object flying at low altitude. A pair of F-16 fighters was scrambled to intercept it, but at 3:46 AM the object disappeared from radar screens. It subsequently fell on an undeveloped plot near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship.
Police officers who reached the scene found a sizable crater and scattered fragments. Sirens had been activated in Lublin city and several other counties around 3:50 AM, in response to a massive Russian air and missile strike on Ukraine that was under way at the same time. The all-clear was sounded a few minutes later.
Possible origin of the object
Military analyst Jarosław Wolski wrote on social media that the nature of the intruder was clear. – The only thing we know is that in the early morning a low‑flying turbojet air‑attack means entered from Ukraine and fell near Tarnawa‑Kolonia, creating a large crater. It could have been a cruise missile, or something else – but the fact that it happened during a major Russian air‑and‑missile attack on Ukraine strongly suggests a Russian air‑attack vehicle that suffered a malfunction and flew into Polish territory – Wolski said.
– The chances that it was anything else are essentially zero. The low flight profile eliminates a Ukrainian air‑defence missile (like the one that fell in Przewodów). There were no reports from residents of the characteristic moped‑like buzz, which rules out a Shahed or Gerbera drone. So we are most likely dealing with a Russian Kh-101 or Geran-3 after a malfunction – he concluded.
Expert analysis and missile family
Another analyst, Dawid Kamizela, noted that during the same period a fresh wave of Russian missile strikes was hitting western Ukraine. – Over its western part, several / a dozen or so Kh-101 family cruise missiles were detected. The most likely scenario is that one of them strayed into Poland – Kamizela stated.
No official confirmation of the missile type has been released yet by Polish or NATO authorities. The crash site remains cordoned off as investigators from the Polish military, police and possibly allied agencies collect wreckage for forensic analysis. The incident is the second recorded intrusion of a suspected Russian missile into Polish airspace since the start of the full‑scale war in Ukraine, following the 2022 Przewodów tragedy.
