Mitsubishi Electric picks Warsaw for expansion with Medcom acquisition

Mitsubishi Electric Europe has signed an agreement to acquire 51 percent of Medcom, a Polish manufacturer of power electronics for rail vehicles. The transaction will not change the company’s operational set-up, and Warsaw is set to gain a second Medcom production plant.

Medcom designs, produces and integrates proprietary systems for rolling stock, including complete drive systems, power supply units, control and passenger information systems, as well as charging devices. Its offer for the energy and industry sectors covers DC power supplies, inverters for emergency power systems, ultracapacitor-based energy recovery units, active filters and fast static switches.

The share purchase agreement was signed on August 5, 2026, between Medcom and Mitsubishi Electric Europe, a subsidiary of the Japanese Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to the required administrative approvals. Medcom will remain a separate company within the Mitsubishi Electric Group, retaining its name, brand, business model and operational independence.

Warsaw stays the centre of operations

The company’s headquarters and current production plant will remain in Warsaw, and another manufacturing facility is to be built in the capital in the coming months. The investment is intended to increase the scale of operations and create new jobs across key areas of the business.

After joining the Mitsubishi Electric Group, Medcom will be able to use the global production network of its partner, including capacities in the United States. The Polish management board stays in charge of the company’s strategy and day-to-day operations, and all key strategic and operational decisions will continue to be made by the current management.

– We chose a partner we have known and successfully worked with for over a dozen years. It is a company that has repeatedly proven it respects our organisational culture, appreciates our competences and supports Medcom’s long-term development – said Marek Niewiadomski, president of the Polish company.

More Japanese investment in Polish rail

Medcom’s competences in modern power electronics are to be combined with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s global technological, production and organisational potential. The joint development of next-generation solutions aimed at improving the energy efficiency of public transport is part of the group’s strategy for decarbonisation and sustainable mobility.

– Medcom has been a strategic partner of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for more than ten years and plays a significant role in the development of power electronics technologies. The Polish company consistently strengthens its position in one of the most demanding markets in the world – in Europe. Our goal is to further strengthen this potential and develop Warsaw as the main European competence, R&D and production centre for power electronics for public transport, energy and industry – said Hideto Negoro, Executive Officer at Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

The acquisition of Medcom is another recent sign of Japanese business activity in Poland’s rail transport sector. In June, Hitachi Rail signed a cooperation agreement with Pesa Bydgoszcz and entered a tender for high-speed trains organised by PKP Intercity.
