Bryan Johnson, the American millionaire who spent millions of dollars trying to reverse his biological age and achieve immortality, has revealed he is suffering from an incurable autoimmune disease. The 49-year-old announced on social media that doctors have diagnosed him with autoimmune gastritis (AIG), a condition that causes the stomach lining to attack itself.
In a series of posts, Johnson described his diagnosis as a major setback in his quest for eternal youth. He wrote that AIG is a chronic, irreversible condition that impairs the absorption of iron and vitamin B12, leading to nutritional deficiencies and anemia. Over time, patients face an increased risk of developing stomach cancer. Johnson stated that when AIG is detected, medicine admits defeat, leaving doctors with no choice but to manage the symptoms.
Johnson admitted he had been unaware of the disease for years, despite his rigorous health regimen. He speculated that the condition was triggered by his childhood diet, which he described as full of sugary cereals, sodas, and fast food. After a brief period of healthy living in his early twenties, he fell into a deep depression while building his business and raising three children. He gained 18 kilograms and neglected his health, allowing the autoimmune process to develop.
The man who wanted to be 18 again
Johnson became famous for documenting his extreme health and longevity protocol online. He reportedly spent two million dollars per year on tests, treatments, and supplements, aiming to make his body function like that of an 18-year-old. His routine included waking up at 5 a.m., following a strict vegan diet of exactly 1,997 calories, taking numerous supplements, and exercising daily. He also regularly underwent gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and ultrasound to monitor his progress.
Now, the same man who sought to cheat death has been confronted with a disease that slowly eats away at his stomach. Johnson wrote: – My stomach is eating itself. – He added that he plans to document his battle with the disease on social media, turning his personal struggle into a public lesson about the limits of biohacking.
A lifelong battle with autoimmunity
Johnson revealed that at age 21 he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid. He explained that the thyroid and stomach are closely linked in autoimmune disorders, and when one organ is affected, the other often follows. – As a child, I ate sugary cereals, drank sweet sodas, and consumed fast food. – he wrote, linking his past diet to the current condition. He also noted that the stress and depression he experienced in his late twenties likely accelerated the autoimmune process.
The news has sparked widespread discussion about the limits of longevity science and the unpredictability of autoimmune diseases. Johnson’s case illustrates that even with immense resources and strict discipline, some biological processes remain beyond control. His journey from striving for immortality to facing an incurable disease serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of human health.
