Middle East seeks new corridors: Poland could become a key hub on the map

The Middle East is no longer looking at Europe only through London, Paris or Berlin. After the war in Ukraine, tensions around Iran and the growing importance of maritime security, Central Europe is emerging on the map of the region’s interests. For Poland, this is a chance to become one of the main entry points to this part of Europe.

This shift is detailed in an analysis by Rasha Al Joundy from the Dubai Public Policy Research Center and Dr. Jakub Sławek from the University of Silesia. – Central Europe is becoming an important partner for the Gulf states’ goals because it lies at the center of several areas transforming relations: energy diversification, food security, Black Sea logistics, defense modernization, reconstruction planning and supply chain resilience – wrote the authors.

Poland may become a key hub for Central and Eastern Europe. Concrete projects, business relationships and a more active presence in Middle Eastern countries are required to turn potential into reality.

Energy as a cornerstone

After Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Europe’s energy supply map was redrawn. Poland and other regional states reduced dependence on Russia and now seek new partners. Gulf countries see Central Europe as an attractive market. The analysis mentions Saudi Aramco’s acquisition of a 30% stake in the Gdańsk refinery through Orlen, and Qatari LNG deliveries to Poland via Świnoujście. Masdar, the UAE renewable energy company, announced a 1 GW portfolio of projects in Poland, showing interest in future infrastructure.

Ports, logistics and defense

The war highlighted the importance of corridors through the Black Sea, Danube, Balkans and Central Europe. Ukrainian grain exports and future reconstruction depend on efficient infrastructure. Romania’s Constanța port is central: DP World invests in container capacity, AD Ports signed a framework agreement. Gulf operators see such ports as elements of food security, EU market access and Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Poland’s role grows due to its economy size, location and post-2022 political position. Polish exports to the UAE reached 1.1 billion euros in 2025, imports 277 million euros. Dubai Chamber of Commerce opened a Polish Business Council and a representative office in Warsaw. In defense, Gulf companies like EDGE are active in Hungary and Bulgaria. Poland, with its military modernization, could be a natural partner.

– Central Europe must actively build its brand in the Middle East, present concrete projects and pursue a more consistent economic policy – concluded the authors. Without that, the region remains one with high potential but poorly recognized by partners seeking stability and long-term vision.
