Mesko starts production of propellant for 155 mm ammunition. Key technology transfer from CSG

Mesko, a company within the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), will begin serial production of propellant for modular propellant charges used in 155 mm artillery ammunition. This breakthrough comes after a successful technology transfer from the Czech holding CSG, which shared both know-how and production documentation. The propellant has already passed laboratory tests and live fire trials with the Krab howitzer.

The technology transfer was carried out by CSG through one of its subsidiaries, enabling Mesko to produce the propellant at its facility in Pionki. This is another step in the cooperation between CSG and PGZ, giving the Polish defense industry new capabilities crucial for national security. The propellant will be used to manufacture modular propellant charges for the Polish Armed Forces’ 155 mm artillery systems.

We are delighted that in such a short time we managed to establish production capabilities at Mesko necessary for manufacturing propellant for modular charges. The propellant produced by Mesko successfully passed both laboratory tests and live fire trials using the Krab self-propelled howitzer – said Wojciech Grzonka, President of CSG Poland and Vice President for Sales at CSG Group. He added that this confirms the effectiveness of the technology transfer, which, together with ongoing industrial cooperation, forms the foundation of their partnership with the Polish defense industry, and that CSG is ready to transfer further technologies to Polish companies.

Strategic step toward self-sufficiency

The knowledge and technology transfer from CSG to Mesko is one of the projects related to the implementation of the December 2023 contract for the supply of large quantities of 155 mm artillery ammunition, signed between the Armament Agency and the PGZ-Ammunition consortium. The current philosophy aims to build full capacity in the Polish industry for independent production of complete 155 mm artillery ammunition.

We are implementing these tasks through investments in industrial infrastructure and also by acquiring essential technologies from our partners. Cooperation with the CSG Group proves that this is an effective way to quickly increase production capacity – commented Renata Gruszczyńska, President of Mesko. She noted that the transfer included technical documentation, support in launching a new production line, and the production of the first trial batch of propellant.

Certification and serial production

The first trial batch of propellant underwent laboratory tests and certification firing tests conducted by the Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU). The tests were carried out in field conditions using the Krab self-propelled howitzer and confirmed compliance with all parameters. Thanks to the successful technology transfer, the propellant can now be serially produced at the Mesko plant in Pionki, significantly strengthening Poland’s ammunition production capabilities.

This development marks a major milestone for the Polish defense industry, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical components of artillery ammunition. With ongoing investments and partnerships, Poland is steadily building a sovereign production chain for 155 mm ammunition, essential for modern battlefield requirements.
