After the Ukrainian attack on St. Petersburg, Russian propaganda responded with more nuclear threats. Vladimir Solovyov, the Kremlin’s top propagandist, threatened that Poland will „finally return to its native borders” and that the United Kingdom will be destroyed with a single Poseidon missile strike. This is a direct reaction to the signing of the Polish-British treaty and Ukrainian successes on the front.
The Kremlin’s threats are no coincidence. Overnight, Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces carried out a daring attack on St. Petersburg. At least four drones hit an oil terminal in the port, and others fell on a base in Kronstadt, located on Kotlin Island. According to reports, the target was the corvette „Boikiy” (Project 20380), which was hit by several An-196 „Liutyi” missiles. The strike was particularly painful for Russia because it occurred on the opening day of an international economic forum that Russian propaganda calls the „Russian Davos.” For the first time since the invasion of Ukraine, foreign guests, including Germans, appeared at the event. The Kremlin wanted to showcase state stability and economic resilience. It did not work out.
Solovyov, known for regularly calling for the bombing of Warsaw, London, or Paris, went a step further this time. He stated that „one Poseidon missile attack and the United Kingdom will be gone.” He also added that Poland „misses Russia” and threatened that Warsaw will „finally return to its native borders.” He is echoed by former president Dmitry Medvedev, who periodically repeats that Warsaw is a Russian city and should return to the motherland. Experts have no doubt: this rhetoric intensifies whenever the Russians take hits on the front and need to cover up these events.
Crimea cut off from supplies. The front has essentially frozen
These are not Russia’s only problems. Ukrainian drones have almost completely cut off Crimea from supplies. To such an extent that the occupation authorities have introduced ration cards for diesel fuel, with a limit of 20 liters per person per day. Refueling into canisters is also prohibited. On the night of June 1-2, the Russians responded with some of the heaviest strikes in a long time, using about 650 drones and over 70 missiles of various types. The main target was Kyiv, but strikes also fell on other regions. Nevertheless, the situation at the front has stabilized. According to Reuters, the Russians captured about 82 square kilometers in total during May along a 1,500-kilometer front, while the Ukrainians recaptured about 68 square kilometers. This gives the Russians a net gain of only 14 square kilometers for the entire month. The front has essentially frozen, and the statement „nothing changes on the Eastern front” is the most accurate description.
