KGHM opens third science lab, giving Złotoryja students hands-on chemistry

Students at the John Paul II Secondary School in Złotoryja have gained a new chemistry laboratory, the third facility of its kind opened under the KGHM LAB programme. The room is built for practical science lessons based on experiments, observation and independent work.

The Złotoryja laboratory joins two earlier KGHM LAB chemistry rooms, in Legnica and Bolesławiec. All three belong to a pilot education project run by KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., the copper producer that funds school and community initiatives in towns linked to its operations.

The new room has been fitted with teaching aids, laboratory equipment and technical solutions that let chemistry classes run in an engaging and safe way. Pupils use it to examine scientific phenomena first-hand, develop research curiosity and build skills they can carry into further education and their future working lives.

Practical science instead of textbook theory

The programme rests on the idea that science is learned by doing it: running experiments, watching reactions and reaching conclusions independently. Teachers receive a space and tools meant to make lessons more interesting, and the format is designed to draw teenagers towards science-related interests.

– KGHM LAB is an investment in young people, their curiosity about the world and the competences they need in further education and their future careers. We want pupils to have access to spaces where science becomes a practical experience, not just theory from a textbook. The opening of the laboratory in Złotoryja shows that business support genuinely strengthens local education, creating conditions for talent to develop close to where young people grow up – said Tomasz Półgrabski, Director of the Department of Social Communication and Sponsoring at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.

Inspiration beyond the classroom

After the official inauguration, students met Kornelia Olkucka, a rally driver and one of the scholarship holders of the KGHM Champions of Sport programme. The meeting was arranged to inspire young people to develop their own passions and interests.

Education remains one of the pillars of KGHM’s corporate social responsibility work. The company has for years backed projects aimed at children and teenagers, supporting schools, local educational initiatives and scholarship schemes, along with efforts promoting technical and natural science knowledge. Projects carried out in locations tied to the company’s operations, and those building competences needed by a modern economy, are given particular weight.
