Katowice’s railway junction modernisation has reached another milestone. The road viaduct on Dobrego Urobku Street was handed over to motorists on Friday, and a new pedestrian footbridge across the tracks has been opened in the Załęże district. The work is part of a large-scale rail investment by PKP PLK.
Work on the Dobrego Urobku structure started in mid-June 2025. The old crossing was just 10 metres long and passed over two tracks; after the extension, the structure measures 23 metres and fits a new four-track system underneath. The viaduct also has pavements on both sides of the road, along with protective barriers and bright lighting.
What has already been completed
The project on the Katowice Szopienice Południowe-Katowice Piotrowice line includes 140 engineering structures. Some of them are already in service. The new footbridge connects Pukowca and Pośpiecha Streets in Załęże, while an underground passage at Paderewskiego Street provides another crossing point near the new Katowice Uniwersytet stop.
On Bagienna Street, the old road viaduct has been replaced by a structure designed for a five-track layout. A second viaduct was built alongside it over two extra tracks, enabling a seven-track arrangement. Vehicle traffic has also been brought back under the rebuilt structures on Graniczna and Mikołowska Streets.
Rail structures and remaining works
New railway viaducts have been completed over Przodowników and Załęska Streets, and freight trains are already using them. On the Załęże and Brynów side of Katowice station, eight new railway viaducts were built: five with truss construction and three of reinforced concrete, with a total length of 435 metres. Three of these are already carrying trains.
Construction is currently focused on structures at Mikołowska, św. Jana, Damrota, Lwowska and Kłodnicka Streets, as well as the passage connecting Tylna Mariacka and Wojewódzka Streets. The entire investment is planned to be completed in 2028.
