The supervisory board of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa has appointed Bartosz Styś as the group’s vice-president for economic affairs for the 12th term of the management board. He is set to begin on 1 October, taking over a brief that had been carried on an interim basis by the company’s chief executive.
The decision was announced on 24 September 2026, roughly four and a half months after the economic affairs portfolio was placed in the hands of Bogusław Oleksy, who leads JSW’s management board as president. The supervisory board framed that arrangement as a stopgap, valid only until a dedicated candidate could be found for the vice-presidential post.
The appointment lands at a demanding moment for the coal group. According to estimated consolidated financial results for the first half of 2026, the JSW capital group booked a loss of PLN 1.043 billion over those six months.
A stopgap running since mid-May
Oleksy was asked to combine the presidency with the duties of deputy chief executive for economic affairs in the middle of May this year. From the outset, the arrangement was described as provisional, tied to the period needed to select and appoint another person to the role.
That period now ends with Styś, whose mandate covers the 12th term of the JSW management board. The vice-president for economic affairs function is one of the key posts in a company whose results are closely tied to coking coal and coke prices on international markets.
Europe’s sole hard coking coal producer
JSW’s position in the market is unusual within the European Union. The group is the only producer of hard coking coal in the bloc, and it also ranks among the leading manufacturers of coke used in steel smelting.
Coking coal extraction and sales form one pillar of its business, while coke and coal-derived products make up the second. Those two lines of activity constitute the core operations of the Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa capital group.
