Insurance startup valued at $1.6 billion – EBRD invests in new unicorn

The Serbian-Hungarian insurtech startup Ominimo has completed a Series B funding round, raising capital from a venture capital fund owned by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The company is now valued at approximately $1.6 billion, up from around $230 million just a year ago.

Founded in 2024 and operating out of Hungary, Ominimo sells motor insurance policies – including compulsory third-party liability (OC), comprehensive coverage (AC), and accident insurance (NW) – both online and through a network of intermediaries. The startup acts as a general agent for DA Direkt, a subsidiary of Zurich Insurance Group.

Insurtech unicorn backed by EBRD

The Series B round was aimed at institutional investors, and the EBRD’s VC fund emerged as the lead investor. The fresh capital will be used to expand into new European markets. Ominimo already operates in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Poland, where it has sold fewer than 250,000 policies and settled 2,000 motor claims. The company now plans to enter Italy, Romania, and France.

Expansion plans across Europe and the US

Within the next 18 months, Ominimo aims to obtain its own insurance license, allowing it to sell policies independently across the entire European Union. Further down the line, the startup has set its sights on the United States, with a planned market entry in 2027. The rapid growth in valuation and the backing of a major international financial institution signal strong investor confidence in the digital insurance model.
