Infrastructure under pressure: How modern anticorrosion protection redefines TCO in heavy industry

Rising sustainability requirements, strict safety standards, and pressure to optimize operational costs are forcing management in the chemical and energy sectors to rethink maintenance strategies. In environments with extreme chemical and thermal loads, corrosion of support structures remains a key risk factor. Integrated modular solutions combined with advanced surface engineering are emerging as the answer.

Modern processing and energy plants are designed for maximum process intensification. A side effect is the creation of microclimates – local zones with limited airflow where humidity, temperature swings, and concentrations of aggressive chemicals such as sulfur compounds, chlorides, and acid vapors far exceed general ambient levels. Traditional anticorrosion methods often fall short in these areas. Accelerated metal degradation threatens production continuity and drives up costs for inspections, maintenance, and premature component replacement. In terms of Total Cost of Ownership, corrosion protection has become a strategic business risk management issue.

A breakthrough in protective coatings

To meet these demanding requirements, Sikla has introduced the DUALSHIELD surface technology. This duplex coating system is certified for corrosivity category C5H – very high corrosivity under ISO 12944. The key is its multi-layer construction that shields against moisture, chemical attack, and abrasion. Each layer performs a specific function: a base layer provides adhesion and barrier properties, intermediate layers block aggressive agents, and a top layer resists UV and mechanical wear.

– The application of DUALSHIELD technology guarantees a maintenance-free protection period of 15 to 25 years – said a representative of Sikla Polska. Laboratory tests simulating real-world conditions confirmed salt spray resistance over 1,440 hours, humidity resistance over 1,440 hours, and full structural integrity in both external coastal environments and indoor industrial areas with constant condensation and chemical contamination.

Modularity meets digital integration

The innovation extends beyond materials. DUALSHIELD is available for Sikla’s modular support systems siFramo and siMotec, as well as pipe supports and mounting elements. These systems are compatible with BIM/CAD environments, allowing precise calculation and optimization from the concept stage. Modularity eliminates on-site welding and drilling, preserving the factory-applied coating and preventing corrosion hotspots at joints.

Extended infrastructure life directly supports corporate ESG goals. Fewer replacements mean a lower carbon footprint and less industrial waste. Reduced inspection and maintenance frequency in hazardous areas improves worker safety and frees up resources, lowering operational budgets for maintenance departments.

Sikla Polska offers full technical consulting, digital tool plug-ins, and comprehensive logistics – from dedicated packaging to on-site assembly support. The company invites industry professionals to contact its experts for tailored solutions in demanding environments.
