Important for people over 56. Pension hinges on one document

People born before 1969 can still apply for early retirement, but the outcome depends on a single key document – the work certificate confirming employment in special conditions. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) explains who qualifies and how to submit the application.

Early retirement remains available to those born before January 1, 1969, provided they meet specific legal requirements. Length of service alone is not enough; applicants must prove they worked in hazardous, strenuous, or otherwise special conditions.

ZUS highlights that the right to early retirement is primarily granted to individuals who performed work in special conditions or of a special nature – jobs involving increased risk, harmful environments, or exceptional physical or mental demands.

Who qualifies for early retirement?

The decisive evidence is the work certificate issued by the employer. It must contain a formal entry confirming employment under special conditions or in a special character. If the employer did not maintain departmental lists of positions, the applicant can still demonstrate that their duties match those specified in the 1983 government regulation.

– The key is to document the nature of the work – not just the job title, but actual working conditions – explains ZUS.

To receive early retirement, candidates must also meet other conditions, such as reaching a minimum age (55 for women in some cases, 60 for men) and having the required contribution and non-contribution periods. Exact thresholds depend on the specific category of work.

How to apply for the benefit

The application for early retirement can be submitted electronically via the ZUS platform or in person at any ZUS branch. It must be filed no later than the day before reaching the standard retirement age – 60 for women and 65 for men.

ZUS recommends gathering all supporting documents, including the work certificate, employment history records, and any additional evidence of special conditions.

Once the application is submitted, ZUS reviews the documentation and issues a decision. If approved, the pension is paid from the month following the application date.
