Huge deposit in Poland. A mine like no other is to be built

KGHM Polska Miedź plans to build the first polihalite mine in Poland. The investment would be located near the Bay of Puck, based on the Mieroszyno deposit, whose geological resources are estimated at over 300 million tons. The extracted polihalite is primarily used in fertilizer production.

On Friday in Gdańsk, the authorities of KGHM and the Pomeranian Voivodeship signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation in preparing and implementing the PUCK project. The investment will be based on the Mieroszyno deposit, whose geological resources are estimated at over 300 million tons.

Polihalite is a mineral used in fertilizer production. It contains components essential for agriculture, including potassium, magnesium, calcium and sulfur. Due to its low chloride content, it can be used in sensitive crops such as fruits, vegetables and oilseeds.

A dozen years of waiting

This will be the first such investment in Poland, but the start of extraction will require a long wait. Remigiusz Paszkiewicz, president of KGHM Polska Miedź, said that the process of designing and obtaining environmental, administrative and concession decisions may take from 4 to 6 years. The construction of the mine itself, including shafts to a depth of about 750–800 meters, may take another 8–10 years.

I think that after 12 to 14 years we should start full exploitation of this site – said Paszkiewicz.

Long-term exploration work

KGHM has been conducting exploration and reconnaissance work in the Bay of Puck area since 2014, under a concession for prospecting and exploration of potassium-magnesium salt deposits. The geological documentation of the Mieroszyno deposit was approved by a decision of the Minister of Climate and Environment in June 2025.

The project is a strategic move for Poland’s fertilizer independence and the development of the Pomeranian region. The new mine is expected to create hundreds of jobs and strengthen the domestic supply of raw materials for agriculture.
