Germany changes its mind on China. A clash of superpowers is approaching

Germany is changing its stance on China. Chancellor Friedrich Merz is increasingly accepting the need for actions to address the growing trade deficit and Beijing’s economic policies, reports Bloomberg. In recent months, the German chancellor has publicly warned of the risk of a trade war with China.

Speaking in Cologne, Merz admitted: – For a long time we underestimated China’s strength and economic potential. We are facing a serious strategic turning point.

Bloomberg sources note that Merz’s position on China is not yet fully formed, but he is increasingly listening to voices calling for decisive action. His shift would be crucial for European Commission officials developing a response to the influx of Chinese imports, supported by massive subsidies and an undervalued currency.

A strategic turning point

EU decision-makers argue that such practices destroy jobs in Europe. The determination of the German leader will determine whether the European Union can jointly confront Beijing in the coming months or whether the whole initiative will become another example of EU weakness.

Merz’s previous caution in public statements – especially compared to his tougher stance before taking office – has already dampened the willingness to change trade relations with China. Some EU member states and officials fear the initiative is losing momentum.

EU’s response at stake

– If that happens, German delay could completely undermine actions that already face opposition from Spain – reads the Bloomberg report. The German chancellor’s evolving position is seen as a litmus test for Europe’s ability to act collectively in the face of growing Chinese economic influence.

Observers point out that Berlin’s earlier restraint slowed down the pace of change, and further hesitation could make it impossible for the EU to formulate a common answer to Beijing’s trade practices. The upcoming months will show whether Merz will translate his rhetoric into concrete policy measures.
