German industry sends great news for Poland

German industrial orders rose by 1.9 percent in May compared to April, beating economists’ expectations of a 1.5 percent increase. The improvement was broad-based, not limited to large one-off contracts, and foreign orders – especially from the euro zone – surged 11.2 percent. This marks a positive signal for Poland, Germany’s key trading partner, as Polish exporters are deeply integrated into German supply chains.

According to data released by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, total new orders in manufacturing climbed 6.2 percent year-on-year, the fastest pace since December 2025. Excluding major contracts for aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles, orders still rose by 1 percent month-on-month, indicating that the rebound is not purely statistical noise.

Domestic orders increased by 1.3 percent, while orders from outside the euro zone fell 3.2 percent. The sharp rise in euro zone demand suggests that the recovery may be gaining traction across the bloc.

What the numbers reveal

The May data offer a glimmer of hope after months of stagnation in Germany’s manufacturing sector. Analysts had been concerned that weak global demand and geopolitical tensions would keep orders depressed. The fact that the gain was driven by more than just large-scale projects suggests underlying improvement.

However, it is too early to declare a sustained turnaround. In the three-month period from March to May, new orders were still 0.2 percent lower than in the previous three months, highlighting the fragility of the recovery.

Implications for Polish exporters

Poland’s economy is tightly linked to Germany’s. Polish companies supply components, machinery, metals, chemicals and logistics services to German industry, especially in automotive and machinery sectors. A rebound in German orders typically translates into higher demand for Polish exports.

The latest figures provide a basis for cautious optimism. If the trend continues, Polish manufacturing firms could see an uptick in orders in the coming months. Yet the persistent weakness in the three-month average serves as a reminder that the recovery remains uneven.
