Donald Trump has hailed a historic agreement to completely disarm Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip, saying it clears the way for an Israeli withdrawal. The US president announced the breakthrough on Thursday, calling it a major step toward lasting peace.
Trump shared the news on his Truth Social account. The agreement was reached, he said, by the Peace Council – a body led by the US president and tasked with overseeing the Gaza peace process. He stressed that the plan will be carried out in stages rather than all at once.
– Today the Peace Council reached a historic agreement on the full disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. This is a monumental step toward lasting peace and security – wrote Donald Trump on Truth Social.
Plan for Gaza after disarmament
As part of the deal, a new Palestinian government is expected to take charge of Gaza and work closely with the Peace Council. Trump said the arrangement would satisfy Israel’s security needs and that Gaza would no longer be a base for terrorist attacks. He also linked the agreement to the 20-point Trump plan.
The next phase involves a staged withdrawal. Once Hamas is disarmed, Israeli troops are to pull out, and international stabilization forces will work with a new Palestinian police force. Their mission will be to keep Gaza safe for residents and neighboring countries.
Ceasefire and negotiations
Earlier on Thursday, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported significant progress in talks on the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire. That phase includes Hamas disarmament, a withdrawal of Israeli troops, who still control about 60 percent of Gaza’s territory, and the introduction of international peace forces.
The ceasefire has been in place since October 10, 2025, but has been interrupted by regular Israeli attacks. Local authorities say 1,214 Palestinians have been killed in those attacks. Israel has reported four soldiers killed in Palestinian attacks over the same time.
In early July, Hamas announced it was dissolving its civilian administrative structures in Gaza and handing power to a technocratic Palestinian committee known as NCAG, overseen by the Peace Council. That move was one of the points of the ceasefire agreement.
– A year ago there was a brutal war, a humanitarian crisis, and hostages were held in brutal captivity. We have made historic progress, but there is still much to be done – said Trump.
Trump also thanked the mediators – Egypt, Qatar and Turkey – as well as his team. His statement ended with a warning about the threat from October 7.
– The threat that emerged from the Gaza Strip on October 7 will not be able to rebuild! – wrote Trump.
