Residents of apartment blocks are receiving written reminders about gas safety regulations in Poland. The rules ban the use of LPG cylinders in buildings exceeding four storeys and prohibit the simultaneous use of bottled gas and mains gas in the same building. Violations carry severe penalties.
Zakopane Housing Cooperative has sent letters to tenants reminding them of the applicable regulations. Propane-butane is heavier than air, so any leak causes the gas to sink and accumulate in basements or low-lying spaces, creating a real risk of explosion or fire. In residential buildings higher than four above-ground storeys, using or storing LPG cylinders is absolutely forbidden.
Rules for buildings above four storeys
The ban covers all forms of LPG cylinders, including those used for cooking or heating. In such buildings, only electric appliances are permitted. The regulations are designed to protect residents and prevent catastrophic incidents. Spółdzielnia mieszkaniowa stressed that non-compliance is not only a legal violation but a serious threat to all occupants.
Simultaneous use of gas networks and LPG prohibited
Under a regulation by the Ministry of Infrastructure, a single building cannot simultaneously use both LPG from cylinders and natural gas from the grid. This means that in blocks without a mains gas installation, residents have no legal way to use gas for cooking – electric cookers and hobs are the only allowed alternative. The ministry’s order is unequivocal and applies across the country.
Residents found breaking these rules may face financial penalties. The housing cooperative has urged everyone to check their appliances and, if necessary, switch to electric devices. The reminder letters serve as a final warning before stricter enforcement measures are taken.
