ENGIE Services has completed the acquisition of a stake in the District Heating Company in Białogard. This is another step in the French group’s expansion in Poland’s district heating market. The company is investing in local energy systems that it intends to develop and modernise, preparing them for a gradual reduction in emissions.
The Białogard facility is responsible for producing and supplying heat to residents, public institutions and local businesses. The company also generates electricity using a gas fired combined heat and power plant. ENGIE is therefore acquiring existing infrastructure with an established customer base, rather than a project that would require a system to be built from scratch. The completion of the transaction was reported by the WNP news portal.
The acquisition of a stake in ZEC Białogard is part of a series of investments made by ENGIE Services in Poland. In June 2026, the company finalised its acquisition of Kogeneracja Karlino, which operates a local district heating system in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Earlier, it also reached an agreement to acquire more than 94% of the shares in Elektrociepłownia Milicz in Lower Silesia.
The group’s strategy involves expanding its portfolio of local energy systems and improving their efficiency. ENGIE already owns district heating assets in Słupsk and Złotów. In both cities, key stages in the transition away from coal for heat production were completed in 2025. Expanding its portfolio to include additional companies gives the group an opportunity to apply its technical and organisational experience to the modernisation of further installations.
The aim is not simply to increase the number of companies acquired. ENGIE is also developing its offering for local authorities that need capital and technological support to restructure their district heating systems. One proposed solution is a public private partnership model in which a private partner finances and carries out the investment and subsequently maintains the infrastructure under agreed terms.
Heat and electricity from Białogard
The District Heating Company in Białogard is important not only for municipal heating. It supplies heat and hot water to residential buildings, institutions, and commercial and industrial facilities. It also generates electricity and develops local energy infrastructure.
The company has been investing in the modernisation of its heat sources and distribution network for years. The first stage of a major investment programme, completed in 2019, included the construction of low emission energy sources and infrastructure for distributing heat and electricity. In subsequent years, the company developed solutions designed to improve transmission efficiency and energy management.
For the new owner, acquiring an operational system with existing infrastructure, customers and operational expertise is important. Such assets can provide a foundation for further investment, particularly where there is scope to improve generation efficiency, reduce network losses and gradually change the technologies being used.
Poland’s district heating sector faces the need to modernise its generation sources and networks. For many companies, this means securing capital for new installations, improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. At the same time, local authorities must ensure continuity of supply and keep costs for residents under control.
ENGIE intends to expand its business both by acquiring existing systems and by cooperating with local authorities on new investments. The group has expressed interest in further asset acquisition opportunities and modernisation projects carried out under public private partnership arrangements.
The acquisition of ZEC Białogard strengthens the French group’s presence in the local district heating market. The further impact of the transaction will depend on subsequent investments, how the acquired infrastructure is managed and the pace of its modernisation. A change of ownership alone does not determine the timetable for new projects or their impact on customer tariffs.
